The Start

The first computer I’ve played with (that I can remember) as a kid was the C64. Then got my own DOS computer with CD-ROM drive that had loads of games - The Lost Vikings are still vivid. Some time later in 2012 I got in to homelabbing and ran Proxmox v2 on a laptop. It had a built-in UPS! This got my ball rolling in to IT and later networking.

The best way to learn and improve is to build something, break it, reflect, document and continue breaking stuff. If you are not aware of danger, there is none.

Skillset

I consider myself very knowledgeable about (in no particular order):

  • Networking troubleshooting (tcpdump or it didn’t happen)
  • Service-Provider networking
    • Daytime commit-ing @ AS9150
    • Personal Autonomous System: AS210225
      • v6 PI 2001:67c:1710::/48
  • Firewalling (ip/nftables, SRX, pf)
  • Linux/unix

Otherwise known with:

  • Juniper
    • JNCIA-Junos
    • JNCIS-SP
  • Cisco (CCNA 200-301, expired)
  • Datacenter operations
  • Optical networking (ADVA/Adtran, WDMs etc)
  • Mail MX systems (smtpd, postfix, dovecot)
  • Programming: golang, hobbyist C, python, automation stuff

Networking guys are scary, because we have to prove it is not the network causing the issue. Which means we have to know all your layers of abstraction.

TODO

  • JNCIP-SP
  • ?
